Dear Mr. Strang,
My name is Emmett Eldred. I am one of many youth and young adults who belong to an active, passionate movement to more closely and intentionally reflect Jesus’ love and teachings in our everyday lives. I am writing to you as part of a series of over 1000 letters that I will write to public figures and media over the coming year about the Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN), the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria.
The EYN is an incredible group of people whose inspiring story is beyond worthy of coverage in your magazine and the attention of your readers. I’m sure you remember the 276 school girls from Northern Nigeria who were kidnapped by Boko Haram. Few people realize that three-fourths of those girls belong to the EYN. In fact, few groups of people have suffered from the violence in Nigeria more severely than the EYN.
What makes the EYN’s story of interest to your readers is the remarkable and courageous way that they have lived out their faith in the midst of such trying times. The Church of the Brethren, including the EYN, is a historic peace church. Though it is confronted with terrible hardship, the EYN have refused to give up their conviction to peace.
In the face of great hatred, fear, and division, the EYN have responded with even greater love, courage, and community. They understand that they are called to be a beacon of Christ whose brightness cuts through a darkening situation. They have met their call from Christ to be leaders in working towards the restoration and dignity of all people in Nigeria, even though this means great sacrifice.
These people fill me with hope, so I will never stop advocating for them.
I hope you will feature the incredible story of the EYN in your magazine. I truly believe that your readers will find their story inspiring like I have, and like me they will be moved to action and self reflection. They will ask themselves a question that I have had to ask myself: if I were a member of the EYN, would my faithfulness be so great?
